Chapter One
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Unlike many have thought, my childhood life was not hard. I was not abused. I did not live in fear, or poverty, but I also did not learn to love, or to feel sympathy, or kindness. I grew up in a formal setting. Trivial things such as happiness were forgotten when it was necessary to maintain your high-class status.
I remember sitting in my bedroom, contemplating life at around eight years old. I remember being continually bored as a child, which was strange, because, seemingly, I had everything I ever wanted. All the best toys, books, and games. When I confessed to my parents that I was bored, they asked me what more I could possibly want, as we had bought out the toy store in Diagon Alley not too long ago? And I told them what I wanted. I wanted friends. No, your ears do not deceive you. I, Severus S. Snape, was lonely. But, of course, my parents had to make sure beforehand that these so-called friends would be appropriate. I had had the status discussion at least twice, if not a million times a month since I was two.
"Severus, there are two kinds of people in our world, do you understand? You have pureblood wizards, and you have disgusting, vile half-breeds and muggle borns. You are never to consort with anybody of muggle parenthood, nor anyone who thinks it well to. Do you understand me, Severus?"
"Yes, Father."
Unfortunately, there were not many that fit the stereotype in our neighborhood. Or so I had thought. It turned out that right next door lived Lucius Malfoy, and his older sister Christine. And that's where the trouble all began.
If I had been brainwashed into my political standings by my parents, it was nothing compared to what I learned at the Malfoy Manor. It was all you heard about. Conversations at breakfast, to quick exchanges in the hallway began and ended with the discussion of those vile beings known as mudbloods. Which is not to say nothing good came out of my friendship with Lucius...wait--scratch that. Nothing good came out of my friendship with Lucius except for the fact that I had someone to talk to at school.
Do you really think friendship counts for anything now?
And the school years drew nearer and nearer as we got older, and finally I stepped off the train and onto Hogwarts grounds...and really, that's where everything began.
